Garrett ACE 150 Metal Detector Reviews, Price and Specifications

Before the ACE 250 came along, the ACE 150 was one of the most popular beginner metal detectors on the market.

Even though this is an older model, it has been used by many detectorists to find hidden treasures and relics. It was also used to find a £100,000 haul of Roman coins.

Garret ACE 150 Review

Target ID/Descrimination

The ACE 150 comes with 3 preprogrammed search modes and 4 sensitivity settings:

Mode Details
All Metal Picks up everything including Iron
Jewelry Rejects iron, but detects all other metals
Coins Rejects iron and pull tabs, but detects other metals

When you first start to use the detector you will want to use the All Metal mode. Some silver coins are detected as pull tabs or pull rings. This is especially true of hammered silver.

Over time you will be able to tell the difference between the different tones the detector makes.

When testing All Metal mode in the field, the machine picked up everything iron with a low tone, small coins with a short tone and larger coins with a bell tone.

In Jewelry mode, the iron objects were not picked up at all. Coins were picked up with ease. In this mode, pull tabs can be quite annoying. However, changing to coin mode means that you often miss small silver objects.

Battery Indicator

The LCD display has an indicator for the remaining battery life. However, the indicator does not work and was only added to the LCD for the ACE 250 model.

The unit uses 4 AA size batteries and can function for 25 to 30 hours. Some users have reported even longer periods – but it largely depends on the type of batteries you are using. We recommend that you get rechargeable batteries – as this will save you money in the long run.

Is the ACE 150 waterproof?

The ACE 150 is not waterproof or water-resistant.

You may read on other sites that the coil is waterproof. This is largely true, however, you cannot get the control box or LCD display wet. If you do, it will stop working and is not covered by the warranty.

In fact, you should avoid using the unit in the rain or light drizzle for the same reasons.

How deep can it detect?

Objects up to 8 inches deep can be detected with the standard ACE 150 coil.

Based on the ground conditions, your results may vary. It is not recommended for using over wet sand. When working on dry sand, select the All Metal mode and set the sensitivity as high as you can.

The LED will indicate 2 inches, 4 inches, or 6 inches+ on the display

Does it have a pinpointer?

The ACE 150 does not come with any pin-pointing functionality. This was added into later Garret ACE models.

We recommend getting a handheld pinpointer or using an optional sniper coil. targeting with a coil is always hit and miss. Using a pinpointer will certainly save a lot of aggravation.

Can is be used by a child or a tall adult?

The detector can be adjusted from 42 to 51 inches in length.

Because of its light weight, it can easily be handled by young children and makes an ideal starter detector for this age group. Many of the cheaper detectors don’t pick up all metals or have limited depth ranges.

Can the coils be swapped?

The standard coil can be swapped for any of the Garrett ACE coils. The stock coil is the 6.5" x 9" ProFormance coil.

Other options include the Garrett 4.5" Sniper coil, the Garrett 9" x 12" coil, the Garrett 8.5" x 11" coil, or the DETECH 8" x 6" S.E.F coil.

This is an important feature that gives you additional flexibility as you gain more experience.
